Our 5-Hour Time-Travel Through the 1800s
5 hours = 5 dances = the full 19th century. Each hour covers 20 years, with its own dance, aesthetic, music, and atmosphere. You learn every dance of the Regency era โ from the formal Minuet to the scandalous Waltz as the Grand Finale.
The Minuet
The Most Formal โ Oldest & Slowest
Small, precise steps. Bows and curtsies. The minuet was the most refined dance of the Regency era โ a display of grace, posture, and social standing. Think of it as the opening ceremony of the garden party. By the Regency period it was fading from fashion, but it remained the gold standard of elegance.
Fun Fact
โThe minuet was basically the red carpet walk of its time โ everyone watched, everyone judged, and your reputation could rise or fall in a single bow.โ

The Minuet ยท 1800โ1820
The Cotillion
The Icebreaker โ Lively & Playful
A group dance similar to the quadrille but slightly less rigid โ more improvisational and playful. Often used to open a ball, the cotillion was a way to get everyone on the dance floor. It set the tone โ energetic, inclusive, and celebratory. It gave people a chance to dance with multiple partners without it being scandalous.
Fun Fact
โThe cotillion was the icebreaker of the Regency ballroom. It got everyone moving, laughing, and ready for the rest of the afternoon.โ

The Cotillion ยท 1820โ1840
Country Dancing
The High-Energy Crowd Pleaser โ Everyone Moving
Long lines of couples facing each other, with lots of movement and social interaction. Country dances were the oldest tradition โ long-running English social dances that remained extremely popular through the Regency era. They were the most energetic, the most inclusive, and the most fun. No partner needed โ you could jump in and join the line.
Fun Fact
โCountry dancing was the party anthem of the Regency era. When the country dances started, everyone was on the floor โ no exceptions.โ

Country Dancing ยท 1840โ1860
The Quadrille
The Group Project โ Structured & Social
A square dance for four couples arranged in formation. The dance is structured in multiple 'figures' โ choreographed sections with specific steps. Couples advance, retreat, turn, and promenade across the open-air setting of Central Park. The quadrille was the dance of the Regency ballroom โ it required skill, coordination, and was a major social event.
Fun Fact
โThe quadrille was like the group project of the ballroom โ everyone had to know their steps, or the whole thing fell apart. Mess up? The entire garden watches.โ

The Quadrille ยท 1860โ1880
The Waltz
The Scandalous One โ Romantic & Revolutionary (Grand Finale)
A partner dance in 3/4 time with a turning, rotating motion. Partners held each other closely โ the gentleman's hand on the lady's waist, her hand on his shoulder. The waltz was revolutionary and scandalous for the Regency era. Before it, dances were mostly group formations where partners barely touched. The close hold was considered shockingly intimate. Parents were horrified. Young people loved it. It changed everything.
Fun Fact
โThe waltz was basically the TikTok dance of its time โ parents hated it, young people couldn't get enough of it, and it changed everything.โ

The Waltz ยท 1880โ1900
All levels welcome. No partner needed. No experience required. Xavier and Caterine guide you through every dance โ from the formal Minuet to the romantic Waltz. Dancing is optional. Connection is guaranteed.
