Week 3 · The 80s Caribbean Era
When the Caribbean Took Over the 80s
The 1980s were when Caribbean rhythms exploded globally. Merengue became the anthem of Dominican neighborhoods from Washington Heights to the Bronx. Salsa evolved into a slicker, more polished sound. Cha-Cha kept the dance floors moving. This is the era that gave NYC its Caribbean heartbeat — and we're bringing it to Brooklyn Bridge Park at golden hour.
Week 3 of the Latin Vibes Sunset Series takes you into the heat of 80s Caribbean culture. Merengue, Salsa, and Cha-Cha — the three dances that defined Latin nights in New York City. No partner needed. No experience required. Dress theme: 80s Caribbean tropical. Just show up.

The Era
80s Caribbean: The Golden Age of Merengue
Merengue — The National Dance
Born in the Dominican Republic, Merengue became the soundtrack of Caribbean New York in the 80s. Fast, infectious, and impossible not to move to. Washington Heights and the Bronx were alive with it every weekend.
Salsa — NYC Style
By the 80s, New York Salsa had evolved into a polished, sophisticated sound. The Fania era was maturing. Eddie Palmieri, Celia Cruz, and Willie Colón were defining what Latin music meant to a generation.
Cha-Cha — The Timeless Classic
The Cha-Cha never went out of style. In the 80s it was everywhere — from the social clubs of East Harlem to the dance studios of Brooklyn. A staple of every Latin dance night.
Caribbean NYC Energy
The 80s were when Caribbean culture claimed New York City. Dominican, Puerto Rican, and Cuban communities brought their rhythms, their style, and their joy to every corner of the five boroughs.
