Week 2 · The 70s NYC Era
The Decade That Gave NYC Its Rhythm
The 1970s were the golden era of Latin dance in New York City. Salsa exploded out of the barrios of the Bronx and Spanish Harlem. Cha-Cha ruled the social clubs. The Hustle swept every dance floor from Studio 54 to the block parties. Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, and the Fania All-Stars were the soundtrack of a city in motion. This is that era — brought to life at sunset on the Brooklyn waterfront.
Week 2 of the Latin Vibes Sunset Series takes you into the heat of 70s NYC. Cha-Cha, Salsa Dura, and Hustle — the three dances that defined Latin culture in the city. No partner needed. No experience required. Just show up.

The Era
70s NYC: The Golden Age of Latin Dance
Salsa — NYC Style
Born in the Bronx and Spanish Harlem, New York Salsa (On2) is the most musical, most sophisticated style in the world. In the 70s, it was everywhere — from the ballrooms of the Palladium to the streets of El Barrio. This is the style Xavier teaches.
The Hustle
The Hustle was the disco-era partner dance that swept New York City in the mid-70s. Smooth, stylish, and deeply connected to the Latin community — it was the bridge between the barrio and the ballroom. Think Saturday Night Fever, but make it Latin.
The Soundtrack
Celia Cruz. Tito Puente. Willie Colón. Héctor Lavoe. Fania All-Stars. The 70s had the greatest Latin music catalog ever assembled — and we're bringing it to Brooklyn Bridge Park at golden hour.
NYC's Latin Soul
The 70s were when Latin culture claimed New York City. The Bronx was burning, but the dance floors were alive. This is the decade that gave NYC its rhythm — and it's the era we're celebrating in Week 2.
